Apia, Samoa – 05 September 2025 – Police now hold in custody a 46-year-old male identified as the importer of a 1.835 grams of methamphetamine intercepted by the Ministry of Customs yesterday.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry, Fonoti Talaitupu Li’a-Taefu said this seizure follows months of targeted operations by the Ministry based on intelligence and profiling. This is the third seizure of illicit drugs made within this year.

The 1,835 grams of methamphetamine were concealed within four (4) bags of rice from a personal consignment originating from the United States of America.

Fonoti commended the diligence and work of officers who were involved in this operation. Emphasis was again made on the crucial role of proactive intelligence-led operations in protecting Samoa’s borders and its people.

The detection and seizure highlights Samoa Customs’ commitment to combating the trafficking of illicit drugs and has protected about $1.8million in community damage.

“This seizure is another clear example of the importance of vigilance, pro-activeness and intelligence in the fight against transnational crime. By preventing these harmful substances from reaching our communities, we are protecting families, safeguarding lives, and upholding Samoa s safety and wellbeing,” said Fonoti.

Samoa Customs is urgeing the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious cross-border activity to protect Samoa from the devastating and harmful impacts of illicit drugs.
