Bystander stabbed in Melbourne CBD after chasing man armed with knife

A man has been stabbed in central Melbourne after trying to stop an “erratic” man carrying a knife through the CBD.

Police said a man armed with a knife was seen running through a Lonsdale Street shopping centre car park about 6am on Thursday.

Two bystanders chased the man along nearby Elizabeth Street and performed a citizen’s arrest. Police then took the 32-year-old Dallas man into custody.

During the altercation, one of the bystanders, a 41-year-old Maddingley man, was stabbed in the lower body.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to St Vincent’s hospital in a stable condition.

A second man – a 35-year-old from Sanctuary Lakes – was uninjured.

A witness told The Age he saw a tradie who had been stabbed “holding something to his leg”.

He also said he saw another man in handcuffs with three police officers standing over him.
