Fiji Airways will suspend its Canberra service in the New Year amid ongoing global uncertainty and rising fuel prices.
Head of Aviation at Canberra Airport, Michael Thomson, said the South Pacific airline had delivered the disappointing news today (26 August).
Mr Thomson said Fiji Airways had made the difficult decision to suspend its Canberra to Nadi service from 5 February 2027.
He said that for more than three years, the route had provided an important direct connection between Canberra and Fiji, as well as onward links to North America.
“However, the impacts of global uncertainty, continued escalation of fuel prices and softer demand for travel to the United States have currently made the service challenging to sustain,” Mr Thomson said.
He said flights would continue to operate until 5 February 2027.
“So there is still time for Canberrans and travellers across the region to enjoy a direct escape to Fiji and experience its world-famous warmth and hospitality,” he said.
“We thank Fiji Airways for its commitment to Canberra and look forward to welcoming them back when the economic conditions improve. We remain focused on growing direct international connectivity for the Canberra region.”
Chief minister Andrew Barr said the decision was disappointing news for Canberra, but it reflects the difficult global environment in which airlines are operating.
“The ongoing economic impacts of international conflict, including significantly higher aviation fuel costs, continue to place pressure on airlines and routes around the world,” he said.
“These factors have made this service difficult to sustain.
“I want to thank Fiji Airways for its partnership with Canberra over the past three years. The service has provided an important connection to Fiji and valuable onward links to North America for travellers across our region.”
Mr Barr said the ACT would continue working closely with the airline and Canberra Airport to explore opportunities to restore the service as economic conditions improve.
“Canberra’s population and economy continue to grow, strengthening demand for international travel,” he said.
“We remain committed to expanding our aviation connections, strengthening our links with the world, and ensuring Canberra is well positioned when airlines look to grow their networks again.”
Fiji Airways launched its service in July 2023 with two services a week on Tuesdays and Fridays, but added another service in October 2023 after strong demand.
The airline also provided a seamless connection to the US, with direct flights from Nadi to Los Angeles and San Francisco.
But the US and Israeli war on Iran has thrown oil markets into turmoil, contributed to rising costs across the economy and impacted travel.
The suspension is a setback for Canberra Airport’s international ambitions. The Fiji Airways service to Nadi was significant for Canberra Airport because it meant it was back in the international game after the devastation of the pandemic on the aviation industry.
The airport recently signed an agreement with the Eastern Airports Group, based in Nanjing, raising hopes for direct flights to and from China.
