Gold medallist Hansel McCaig.
Winning Team Fiji’s first gold medal at the Sol2023 Pacific Games in Honiara on Wednesday night was special for swimmer Hansel McCaig.
It was his first medal at his second Pacific Games outing.
He stopped the clock at 23.22s in the 50metres freestyle.
And the 20-year-old dedicates his gold medal win to his grandmother.
“She’s (grandmother) always there for me,” he said.
“She means a lot to me. Love you Nanna.”
He started swimming at the age of five and started competing at 14. McCaig had won two bronze medals at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.
He is an engineering student at the University of the South Pacific – a stark contrast from his grandparents, Dr Eddie and nanna Dr TauMcCaig, including his parents Dr Vaigalo McCaig and mum Dr Terna Rasoki-McCaig, who are doctors.
