People with anger issues should seek help says Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran.

Her comments follows the release of the post-mortem examination results of a 29-year-old woman which revealed she died from physical abuse.

Police are treating the case as murder.

Ms Kiran said it was devastating to hear that another woman had died from physical abuse.

“Everyone has a role to play in putting a stop to domestic violence,” she said. “We need to denounce domestic violence in Fiji.”

Ms Kiran said anyone who was violent against women and children was a coward.

Divisional police commander northern, Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrodroka said under the Crimes Decree, anyone could report against domestic violence — but this was not happening in Fiji. He said this was despite the fact that the Fiji Police Force was continually stressing that everyone had a role to play in putting a stop to domestic violence.

“The truth is the vulnerable members of the communities, the children and women are still facing physical abuse,” he said.

“As a family member when your sister-in-law is being physically abused, you should stop it and lodge a formal complaint to the Fiji Police Force.”

The womand had gone to Labasa Hospital seeking medical attention after sustaining injuries.

“May be these families are not reporting cases of domestic violence because they do not know their rights or the law.”
