In a bid to break The Hangover star’s awards season curse, Netflix has reportedly poured millions of dollars into its campaign for Cooper to come out on top for its musical drama Maestro, with Monday’s Globes ceremony set to reveal whether or not he’ll finally take home a gold statue for his works.

The 81st annual Globes will get underway Monday morning, Australian time, with a flurry of A-listers primed to walk the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

After a somewhat dire few years of lacklustre award shows thanks to Covid-19, the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the actors’ and writers’ strikes, the Globes is back to its original glory with stars including Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Dua Lipa among just a handful of the big name attendees.

Billion-dollar smash Barbie has led the field with eight nominations, while its box office frenemy Oppenheimer is just one nomination behind.

The two films, which were released on the same day in July, led to the heavily-covered “Barbenheimer” cultural phenomenon, with Oppenheimer making more than $US900 million at the global box office.

In Cooper’s category of Best Actor in a drama (he’s also up for Best Director), the actor is among stiff competition alongside Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Leonardo DiCaprio (Killers of the Flower Moon), Colman Domingo, (Rustin) Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers).

Australia’s own Robbie is nominated for Best Actress – musical or comedy, for Barbie, as well as Emma Stone (Poor Things), Natalie Portman (May December), Jennifer Lawrence (No Hard Feelings), Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple) and Alma Pöysti (Fallen Leaves).

Over in the television categories, unsurprisingly, it’s all about the bombshell final season of HBO’s Succession, which premiered to critical and commercial success last year.
