Lauren Skora is a cookbook author. The 36-year-old shares her day on a plate.
5.40am Wake after a broken night with my newborn and go straight into a feed. I have a big glass of water with Celtic salt.
6.35am A bowl of granola sprinkles with milk and frozen raspberries while getting the kids ready.
8.15am A boiled egg on the school and daycare run.
8.55am A large full-cream latte on a walk with the baby.
10am A protein bar between feeds and emails.
12.30pm Sourdough with avocado, boiled eggs and sauerkraut, plus half a chocolate bunny my kids forgot about after Easter.
3pm I finish the leftover fruit and veg from the kids’ lunchboxes.
5.25pm Chicken soup stretched with jasmine rice cooked in bone broth.
7.15pm A trail mix bikkie I made for the kids’ lunches and chamomile tea.
Dr Joanna McMillan says:
Top marks for… Making almost all your meals and snacks yourself with a nice selection of whole foods. The forgotten chocolate bunny also provides an important component of food – joy!
If you keep eating like this you’ll… Have a solid nutritional base, but breastfeeding increases energy and nutrient demands and this day looks light on substantial meals, vegetables and omega-3-rich seafood. Celtic salt contains little iodine, and without iodised salt or a suitable supplement you may fall short of the quantity needed for your thyroid and your baby’s brain development.
Why don’t you try… Adding a nourishing afternoon mini-meal – Greek yoghurt with fruit and nuts, or hummus on wholegrain toast – rather than just the children’s leftovers. Include oily fish such as salmon, sardines or trout twice a week. Swap Celtic salt for iodised salt in family cooking, or if using a breastfeeding supplement check that it provides 150 micrograms of iodine (you need 270 micrograms a day during breastfeeding).
Mother-of-three Lauren Skora is the co-author of Lunchbox Bible (Hardie Grant Books).
