Tegan Roberts, 25, from the south coast of NSW, was in the tourist hotspot to celebrate her younger sister Maddy’s 18th birthday, along with her dad and stepmother.

They arrived on the beach resort of Kuta on February 27 and enjoyed a day of sightseeing.

But things took an unexpected turn when Tegan began to fall ill after complaining about feeling dehydrated and “yukky”.

She texted her mother Anne-Marie, who was back home in Shoalhaven, saying she “vomited again” and that she had no energy, “not even to walk to the toilet”.

“Within the first day she sent me a message saying ‘I’m not feeling great, Mum’,” Anne-Marie told news.com.au.

“She has cystic fibrosis and had a double lung transplant five years ago, so she has always struggled with health since birth — so I am used to her saying she’s not feeling the best.”

But when Tegan texted saying she needed to “get on a plane home and go straight to hospital”, with her sister also texting their mum to say she was quite ill, Anne-Marie knew something wasn’t right.

“She said she felt ‘yukky’, she stopped responding,” Anne-Marie said.

It sent the mother-of-two into a panic.

The 25-year-old had collapsed and was rushed to BIMC Hospital in Kuta where she ended up in ICU.

Anne-Marie took the first flight out of Sydney to Bali on the Sunday morning to find her daughter barely responsive.

“I had never seen her so sick,” a distraught Anne-Marie told news.com.au. “It was really awful.

“She said, ‘Am I going to die?’”

Fighting back tears, Anne-Marie told her daughter she’s not, but her health has since severely declined.

Tegan was flown to Perth by a medevac emergency flight and is currently fighting for her life at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

“She is on life-support. Her kidneys have failed, she’s on dialysis and she’s had respiratory failure,” Anne-Marie said.

“They say it was severe dehydration. She also had swabs done it revealed she had rhinovirus.”

It is a common cold, but they can cause severe illness, especially in people with weakened immune systems, asthma, or other underlying medical conditions.

Anne-Marie said given how hot it was in Bali on the day Tegan fell ill, and getting so severely dehydrated, while the hospital did the best they could, “she wasn’t getting enough fluids”.

“And with cystic fibrosis, you sweat more than others … and if you lose all your salts and electrolytes, you become dehydrated.”

People who have cystic fibrosis have a faulty protein that affects the body’s cells, its tissues, and the glands that make mucus and sweat, according to the National Institues of Health.

Tegan, who also now has acute phenomena, is currently in a stable condition.

“She is completely unresponsive. Doctors have her stable but her kidneys have completely gone. The doctors are trying to wean back the support she’s on but they have been unable to as her kidneys haven’t responded yet.”

Anne-Marie’s friends have started a GoFundMe to help with medical costs including the $130,000 medevac plane which the family may have to fork out if insurance doesn’t cover it.

“The insurance company organised the flight in good will, but we had to sign papers that we will have to foot bill as they can’t guarantee it will be fully covered,” Anne-Marie said.

So far, $23,251 has been raised, with the highest donation at $5000.

The disability support worker, who has had to put her job on hold to be by her daughter’s bed side, said she’s overwhelmed by the love and support from friends and strangers.

“I am a bit overwhelmed by it all,” she told news.com.au as she fought back tears.

The family is praying for Tegan’s recovery and while Anne-Marie said she had hesitations over the Bali trip, she just wanted her daughter to be happy. It also marked her first trip since her double lung transplant five years ago.

“Of course I was concerned, but Tegan’s life has been shortened because of Cystic Fibrosis, and so I just want her to be able to have fun.”
