Do you really need two bedrooms? Why a separate dining room made more sense for this owner

This sophisticated apartment is a masterclass in refined elegance.

“I wanted the home to feel collected and calm,” says Gurtler. The artwork is by Alexander Brown, the sofa is from MCM House.Armelle Habib

The home
A new, two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment by Cera Stribley Architecture and Interior Design in south-east Melbourne.

Who lives here
Interior designer Nickolas Gurtler, owner of Nickolas Gurtler Office, with Hermes, his Pembroke Welsh corgi.

What I did
“The apartment had a strong architectural foundation, so my changes were quite considered,” says Gurtler. “I added window treatments, additional wall lighting and my collection of furniture and objects.”

My favourite room
“The dining room, which was originally the second bedroom,” says Gurtler. “It’s where I work from home and where I also entertain friends and family. It’s a better use of the space than a spare bedroom, which would mostly sit untouched.”

The ’hood
“It’s a diverse, friendly neighbourhood, and I can walk Hermes to Hopetoun Gardens every morning; it’s a peaceful ritual.”

Future plans
“I’m planning a few small refinements to the kitchen, including new overhead cabinetry in stainless steel and a new tap,” says Gurtler. “Like most designers, I think of home as an evolving space.” Best advice “Edit yourself. Be disciplined enough to choose the right piece for a space, even if it isn’t your favourite piece in isolation.”

“My dining room and office is quite compact, but it has a real intimacy and warmth,” says Gurtler. “The USM sideboard is one of my favourite pieces.”

“The Platner side table is a vintage piece I splurged on during the pandemic,” says Gurtler. “It’s an iconic design and I love how the stone has patinated with age.

“The bathroom was designed by Cera Stribley and has an indulgent, spa-like atmosphere,” says Gurtler. The wall lights are by Rich Brilliant Willing.

“I like interiors to have moments of surprise that bring personality into a composed space,” says Gurtler. The plinth is by Karin Bochnik of Curated Editions.
