Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has called the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations a “joyous communal gathering” complete with “spectacular fireworks”.

“It was very special,” Ms Moore said during a media conference on Monday morning.

“The city has always had free (viewing) sites, the government up until this year has charged for sites, and most of the sites this year were free.

“So people were really welcome.

“It was an egalitarian spectacular night for the community – our international community as well as our local community.”
