A number of people are injured, a police spokesperson said.
One person has been airlifted to hospital and five others have also been injured following a crash on State Highway 2 north-east of Dannevirke.
The crash occurred shortly before 5:45pm and involved four vehicles.
A police spokesperson said the status of the six injured ranges from moderate to critical.
But St John confirmed to Stuff eight patients in total had been treated, with five in a serious condition and three in moderate condition.
State Highway 2 is closed between Ruahine Street and Otanga Road, and is expected to remain so for another couple of hours.
