Speaking with an Australian accent, the woman who appears to be Contarino replies politely: “I have a boyfriend”.
“Oh, Okay. Are you waiting for him, or … ?” the man asked.
The Australian woman told him no, that she was just having a cigarette and was going to go back inside the store.
“Okay, yeah of course,” he replied, before turning back to his car, at which point the video ended.
“Trying to pick up a beautiful woman,” he wrote as the caption for the video.
The Instagram user regularly posts footage of himself approaching women in Las Vegas.
According to the social media account @realvegaslocals, Damian, the man who filmed the video with his Meta glasses, sent them the footage and said metadata showed it was recorded on June 17 at 3.46pm. The video was posted on June 28.
Contarino last spoke to her family on June 20. A police spokesman said “she might possibly be in severe emotional distress and in need of medical assistance”.
She is thought to have been on a solo trip in the US, having visited Palm Springs before her stop in Las Vegas.
On June 19, she reportedly texted a friend saying: “I’m about to hike up Lone Mountain then go home – I fly back tomorrow”.
CCTV footage showed her at Timbers Bar & Grill in Las Vegas that evening.
Bar staff reportedly said that Bungalows Hostel, where Contarino was staying, was located in an area “not great for a girl alone”.
Security footage shows the woman at the hostel in the early hours of June 20, the last day her family heard from her.
She was meant to board a bus to Los Angeles to board a flight home back to Melbourne on June 21, but failed to do so.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department have now opened a missing persons case.
In an appeal to the public, authorities described the woman as an “endangered missing adult” who is “experiencing severe emotional distress” and in need of medical help.
Contarino is described as being of slim build, with brown hair and brown eyes.
She was last seen wearing a grey or blue sweatshirt, denim shorts, black and white shoes, and carrying a bag.
