The northern hemisphere ready-to-wear shows are always a preview and a feast for exciting new trends in hair and make-up. And in Australia, they coincide with the start of our cooler months, meaning we can adopt them immediately.
On the catwalk at recent shows in Europe and the US, beauty trended towards the “lived in”. At Coach, this translated into wild, unkempt and frizzy hair, styled by Guido Palau. To get the look, apply Color Wow Style on Steroids Texture and Finishing Spray ($49) to dry hair and style using your fingers.
At Khaite, Frederick Anderson and Bronx, side parts dominated, while fringes (yes, they’re back, and in a smorgasbord of styles) ranged from blunt at Molly Goddard to wispy at Yuhan Wang. 7 for All Mankind reminded everyone that if you aren’t ready for a chop, adopt the “cool girl tuck” by wearing your hair inside the neck of a polo or jacket collar to create a faux bob.
In Milan, hair ranged from effortless and undone to high-shine buns and low-slung ponytails. Trends from the celebrity sphere included Bella Hadid sporting a blunt curtain fringe and Demi Moore’s wet-look bob at Gucci. Meanwhile, Madonna stole the show at Dolce & Gabbana with wavy golden hair and pink lipstick – try Hermès Rouge Satin Lipstick in Rose Bruyère ($120).
Staying at Dolce & Gabbana, the team there focused on precision winged eyeliner paired with an “impeccable, luminous complexion”; for a luxe finish try Hermès Plein Air Luminous Matte Foundation ($240). Smoky eyes featuring under-eye eyeliner were big across several runways, referencing the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Moving to New York, at Proenza Schouler make-up director Thomas de Kluyver smudged bright red pigment over models’ lips. And at Pamella Roland the eyeliner was thick, married with dramatically lush lashes and dark, smoky eyeshadow – try Stila Stay All Day Smudge & Set Waterproof Gel Eye Liner in Stingray Black ($40). Another notable look was light-blue eyeshadow at Marc Jacobs, Gabe Gordon and Eckhaus Latta. To copy this runway look, apply a soft wash of blue over the entire lid, blending up to the brow line; we love Sisley Les Phyto-Ombres in Silky Sky ($85).
In London, lips took on a slightly warped feel. Make-up artist Dick Page played with “bow lips” at Collina Strada, using silver to accentuate the curve of the cupid’s bow. At Proenza Schouler, make-up director Thomas de Kluyver smudged bright red pigment over models’ lips. High-shine lips, albeit stained blue, were also on the agenda at Talia Byre. For a shine booster, try Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil in Pink ($67) over any shade, or wear it on its own.
