I’ll usually set an alarm and then I’ll have another one 15 minutes later for safekeeping, which will get used reasonably frequently. I’ve just got a standard alarm tone from the phone, which is fairly confrontational – I make sure it’s something that’s definitely going to wake me up. It’s a pet peeve of my fiancée, Mackenzie [Webb]. She prefers something a little bit more peaceful, but I’m looking for it to get the job done.
Do you make your bed every day?
If I’m up later than Mackenzie, I will attempt to tidy it, but it’s probably not quite up to her expectations. I’ll try to make an effort to have it presentable. Otherwise, she’ll make sure it’s looking 100%.
What time do you have breakfast and what do you usually eat?
About 6.30am. I make up a big batch of overnight oats on a Sunday. I just chuck whatever in there – oats, and we’re dairy-free, so oat milk, a whole bunch of pumpkin and sunflower seeds, berries, a bit of cinnamon, that sort of thing. I find it quite handy having it ready to go and I don’t have to get up and think about making something.
Do you have a morning workout routine?
As an athlete, I’m working out a lot throughout the day. I usually get to training at about 7.15am and have a bit of a stretch and then get through any individual skill work I’ll do, some passing or some kicking. That 45 minutes from 7.15 till 8 is individualised time for us, so I’ll get to do a workout for whatever my position on the field needs.
What other self-care do you do in the morning?
The cold shower in the morning has become a bit of that for me. It is at times a bit challenging, particularly as we head into the colder Christchurch months, but I do take 20 to 30 seconds during that to control my breath under a bit of stress. I find that a good way to kind of zero myself and start the day. As well as that, I live close to Rugby Park where we train and work, so I walk to work each morning and try to have a pretty mindful walk and set my intentions for the day.
What’s your skincare routine?
In the morning, I keep it reasonably simple, because often we’re heading into the gym pretty early to sweat. So I give my face a wash and moisturise – my skin can get a bit dry. Then when I get home, I’ll get into it a bit more. I use this French brand, La Roche-Posay. Again, I’m advised by my fiancée, she knows a lot more about it than I do, so I follow her lead.
How do you decide what to wear each day?
I have got a lot of our team’s kits so it’s fairly regimented. The one day a week where I get to express myself a bit more is on a day off when we play golf. We get Wednesdays off every week, so on a Tuesday night, I’ll pick out my golf outfit. I’m a big fan of look good, feel good in that space, so I enjoy a bit of expressive freedom there.

How much time do you spend on your phone in the morning?
I’d say about 10 minutes. At breakfast, I might scroll through some of the news or anything that’s been happening in the world overnight or catch up on any notifications from friends over in the UK that might come through overnight. Throughout the rest of the day, I’m reasonably off my phone, with us being pretty active outside until the afternoon, which is quite nice.
Do you consume any other media in the morning?
I used to have a slightly longer walk in my old house, which was about 10 minutes to Rugby Park, and I listened to a meditation podcast on the way there. But, now my walk’s about two or three minutes so by the time you get into it, you’re there. I just try and keep a clear mind and think about how I want to be present and any goals I’ve got for the day to tick off.
I’m not on TikTok. A few years ago, I found myself in a pretty big doom scroll so I’ve cut TikTok over the last couple of years. I’m reasonably active on Instagram. I don’t really have Facebook. I use Messenger but I don’t really use the Facebook app.
What’s your one non-negotiable each morning?
Making myself a coffee. I’ve got a barista-style machine and it’s a bit of trial and error that goes at the start with your beans and getting the grind right, but once you’ve got that down pat, it’s really down to your milk. I’ve gone dairy-free over the last 18 months, and I’ve found the non-dairy milk’s a bit harder to froth, so it’s taken me a while to nail that down. It’s a process I’m getting better at. I’m not necessarily someone who can pump out lots of different latte art – a love heart’s about all I’ve got.
What do you do the night before to make your morning routine easier?
It starts at the beginning of the week. I write down a week plan for my whole week, any meetings I’ve got on, any particular work-ons I’ve got at training, anything like that. That’s a good way to set the intention for the week and have a bit of structure. Each night, I’ll have a look through that to remind myself of what’s key for the next day. And then, the breakfast stuff, getting that sorted and my outfit for the next day, get my bag packed. I’m a big fan of that – I try to have myself reasonably ready to go so I can just get up, have a shower, have my brekkie, my coffee, give Lenny a pat and then get on my way.

Are you a morning person or an evening person?
I’ve started to shift. When I was younger, in my early to mid-20s, I was definitely not a morning person, and was quite a renowned big sleeper-in amongst the Crusaders and the All Blacks. From getting a dog, it’s switched me a little bit, because you’ve got to get him up in the morning, which gets you going. It’s probably not quite as bad as having a newborn, but it’s a step in the right direction.
