Know your limit when it comes to liquor intake, says Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew.
Responding to the recent brawl outside a popular Suva nightclub last weekend, Mr Fong Chew said police had taken note of the situation and would reorganise their coverage so that all may enjoy and welcome the new year.
He said situations like the one currently under investigation usually happened when one consumed too much liquor and lost their ability to know what was happening within his/her surroundings.
“Talking and controlling an over intoxicated person is always a challenge as for them whatever they think or say is always right,” he said.
“Night club owners have every right to deny an over intoxicated person more liquor but at times the situation always turns out ugly and security are called in to remove this over intoxicated person.
“During this removal process, intoxicated friends of this over intoxicated person will join in the commotion, and this is where a situation of aggressiveness arises.
“Our humble advice to the general public who are going to enjoy the new year are: enjoy the new year and celebrate with responsibility.”
He has urged members of the public to know their limit of liquor intake and to respect their surroundings and other people celebrating the same event.
Mr Fong Chew said members of the public must always be mindful of their actions, whether it was verbal and/or physical when drunk, as this led or might lead to unfortunate incidents.
“Responsibility lies with every individual as we are given with a mind to understand what is good or bad.
“We are given two eyes to see and make right choices. We are given two ears to hear and avoid aggressive situations. We are given two hands to control ourselves.
“We are given two legs to walk away from situations of aggressiveness but if one is over intoxicated all the abilities listed above are lost.”
