Ukrainian officials said at least three people were killed and dozens were wounded in a wave of Russian attacks across Kyiv region on Tuesday, January 2, that police said lasted nearly six hours. Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko said two people died and 49 were injured, including 43 who were hospitalized, after a strike on a residential building in the city’s Solomianskyi district. Rocket damage was reported in at least five other districts in the city, Klitschko added. Another two people died in strikes on towns near the capital, according to the Kyiv Regional Military Administration. Air-defense systems downed 72 of 99 missiles and all 35 drones that Russia launched at the country, according to Ukraine’s Air Force. During a visit to a Russian military hospital on Monday, President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would “intensify” strikes against Ukraine in retaliation for a weekend attack on Belgorod, which Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said killed 14 people, including two children.
