Fiji light heavyweight champion Savenaca Naliva was close to losing the title last week.

Naliva was overweight in his title fight against Kolinio Luvelolo forcing the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) officials to declare the fight as a contest.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday BCF chairman Adi Narayan said fortunately for Naliva, the challenger Luvelolo also failed to meet the weight limit.

“If the challenger (Luvelolo) had met the weight, then we would have stripped the title off Naliva and declared it vacant.”

Narayan said from now on they are going to keep a close eye on Naliva.

The no-nonsense administrator said he is going to sit with newly crowned Fiji middleweight champion Winston Hill early next year to discuss his way forward.

“I need to hear from Winston of his plans and we will take things from there.

“Winston who also holds the Fiji super welterweight title will need to decide on which title to hold and which one to relinquish.”

Narayan said they are putting in place policies to clean-up the sport and help revive boxing to what it was like in the seventies.”

“We (board of directors) took-up office in August and we’ve sanctioned four promotions with the final one of the year that took place last Saturday.

“We had three successful promotions except for the one that was in Suva.”
