Fire and Emergency New Zealand said three crews from Rolleston, Wigram and West Melton were dispatched at the request of Hato Hone St John.
The West Melton crew was later stood down, while the other two crews remain on site assisting emergency services.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
