Brace yourselves, McDonald’s lovers, because sometimes the Kiwiburger just doesn’t cut it – and the fast food from across the ocean comes calling.
Not much is worse than a late night scroll on Tik Tok, only to see someone from another country reviewing a fast food delicacy that we can only admire through the screen.
A Quarter Pounder is good, and the new Biscoff McFlurry is certainly a game changer, but can it beat fries loaded with gravy and cheese?
Here are the seven international McDonald’s items that NZ is really missing out on:
Pineapple Custard Pie (Japan)
As a nation that loves the classic apple pie, this feels like a bit of a no-brainer in taking the next step.
While it can be found in a few other places, the Pineapple Custard Pie is currently being advertised in Japan, along with a Milo McFlurry.
Moving into summer, something just feels right about getting onboard with this dessert.
McPollo Italiano (Chile)
Why doesn’t New Zealand have a burger with avocado on it? Where have we gone so wrong?
The McPollo Italiano, sold in Chile, is a grilled chicken sandwich with avocado, tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise.
The burger, with its extra bells and whistles, looks like the bigger, wiser sibling of the McChicken.
Poutine (Canada)
It’s not a McDonald’s exclusive by any means, and likely the street-food version is far superior, but any kind of fries with gravy and cheese must be good.
Costing around $7.60NZD, it’s a little expensive for a side, but the McDonald’s poutine feels like something Kiwis would love.
The restaurants are already making fries by the tonne, surely getting a little gravy and throwing on some cheese wouldn’t be too hard, right?
McVegan (Finland/Sweden)
Something McDonald’s NZ is sorely missing is a solid vegetarian or vegan option.
Burger King has reigned supreme in the fast food scene, with its Rebel Patties – so is it time for Maccas to take a leaf out of the book from Finland and Sweden and bring in the McVegan?
Beer (Europe)
It wouldn’t take much for the NZ public to get behind this one – beer at McDonald’s.
This probably shouldn’t be a full-time thing, but for a couple of weeks over summer it might go down a treat.
There are a number of countries in Europe that have taken this up already, such as Germany, France and Spain.
McSpicy Paneer (India)
New Zealand has done some pretty questionable things with Indian cuisine, we’re looking at you Domino’s Butter Chicken pizza, but the McSpicy Paneer could be another vegetarian hit.
Crispy, coated paneer with lettuce and a spicy sauce – it’s simple and effective.
Mango McFluffry (Malaysia)
There’s been few McFlurry iterations that haven’t been hits and the Mango McFlurry from Malaysia would unlikely be any different.
For those that don’t like the mix of fruit and ice cream, this one may be a pass, but sometimes all the chocolate of a McFlurry can be too much – and the mango might be the solution.
Coming in at roughly $4.25NZD, it’s a relatively cheap get for an afternoon treat.
