YouTuber, pop star, actor, and Grammy nominee—now, aged just 28, South African-born and Perth-raised multi-hyphenate Troye Sivan adds another notch to his ever-growing resume as 2023’s GQ Man of the Year, in association with BOSS. Fresh from his recent stint at the 2023 ARIAs, which saw him sweep four gongs—Song of the Year, Best Solo Artist, Best Engineered Release and Best Produced Release—Sivan stepped foot into Bondi Pavilion this evening as the guest of honour at GQ Men of the Year Awards, receiving his award from none other than American actor Ross Lynch, star of Sivan’s viral music video for ‘One of Your Girls’.

It was Prada again for Sivan, a longtime poster boy for the Milanese house; you might recall his chocolate vest and white short moment at the label’s menswear spring/summer 2024 show, or his sunflower silk top at the aforementioned ARIAs, or even his runway debut for Prada’s little sister, stalking down the catwalk in boat shoes for Miu Miu spring/summer 2024 in October. 

Tonight, Sivan shone in a white waistcoat, shirt and Bermuda shorts, accessorising with long black socks and matching sneakers, as well as a newsboy cap, worn backwards. 

“Thank you so much everyone,” said Sivan while accepting his award. 

“It’s not lost on me the irony of me winning ‘man’ of the year when I did drag for the first time this year. I feel more in touch with my femininity than ever, and I think it speaks to a point I’d really like to make, which is that my relationship with masculinity has been very strange my entire life. I existed in this grey area between not being invited to sleepovers for girls’ nights and not getting along with any of the boys.”

“Unlearning and de-programming all of that has taken so many years and lots of people. I’m so lucky to have incredible women in my life. I pull so much from them, and their strength and power is something I’m in awe of.

“I also have incredible men in my life. And the biggest thing for me has been the queer people in my life that I’ve met along the way. These are people I look to for self love first and foremost, and for love of each other and love of community.”

“I’ve been so over the moon with how everything has been going. I’ve never really felt this way during an album release,” Sivan also told GQ’s editor-in-chief Jake Millar of the release of his third studio album, Something To Give Each Other. “It’s been exactly what I have always dreamt of for this album and I’ve never really had that before. So it’s really fun to feel this creatively fulfilled.”
