“Officers appealed for her to put the weapon down, but she instead moved forward. She was also shot, sustaining critical injuries.
“Immediate medical assistance was provided to the woman but tragically she passed away a short time later.”
The injured man was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Police said on Tuesday evening the man has been summonsed to appear in Christchurch District Court on November 13.
He has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.
A critical incident investigation over the shooting continues.
