Four people who allegedly assaulted Police officers in Qauia, Lami appeared at the Suva Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Serupepeli Masiyara, 27, Senitiki Colati, 30, Maria Luvu, 51, and Famiza Elena, 19, were charged with one count each of serious assault.

It was alleged that the four accused persons had assaulted three Police officers who had approached them for drinking and causing noise at their residence.

It was also alleged that they had obstructed the Police officers from carrying out the arrest during the incident.

Magistrate Seini Puamau while hearing the case said Masiyara, Luvu and Elena could be released on bail under the condition they provide two sureties each and $500 cash bail.

She said the three accused could be granted bail given that they were first offenders and had relevant reasoning to return home.

Colati on the other hand, did not stand a chance in that he absconded bail for five active burglary cases.

Magistrate Puamau informed the court that bail was a test which tested any accused person of their willingness to appear for their next court hearing, and in this case, he already failed that test.

After being informed of his previous charges, Colati challenged the court and said he was wrongfully charged in the current case.

He told the court that he did not obstruct any officer from doing their job, nor did he assault or physically touch any of the officers.

Serupepeli assured the court that he would provide his $500 cash bail and two sureties.

However, given Luvu and Elena’s case of being unemployed and taking care of a family member who was bedridden, Magistrate Puamau ordered them to at least provide their two sureties today after which they would then decide where to go from there.

The four accused persons will remain in remand and will appear in court today.
