Earlier this week, Liu told cable channel NBC Sports she was looking to work on her “overall artistry, spins, jumps, everything” while away from the sport and confirmed she will return for the 2027-28 season.
Liu has taken breaks from skating before, having retired aged 16 after she became the youngest US women’s champion three years earlier and finishing sixth at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games.
On her return for the 2024-25 season, she won the 2025 world championship, then found more success at the 2026 Olympics.
The 21-year-old’s status surged as a result of the Games, and she gained more than 5.5 million followers throughout the competition.
About 5000 people showed up to her homecoming in Oakland, where she was presented the key to the city. She was also spotted at Louis Vuitton’s Paris Fashion Week show and the Met Gala.
After her Olympic victory Liu withdrew from the world championships, but appeared with her teammates on the Stars on Ice tour.
