The AFL will conduct a major review of a coroner’s recommendations to protect players from concussions.

Recommendations include the slashing of full contact training as well as independent doctors removing players from the field.

Former AFL player Shaun Smith received a $1.4 million payout from the AFL in 2020 for concussion symptoms, which remained after he left the code.

“It’s a game of sport – you get people competing against each other; there’s always a chance of a concussion,” he told Sky News Australia.

“Where they really need to be better at is if you do get a concussion, the laws of the game says, and the protocol says you can miss 12 days, and that’s totally inadequate – it’s got to be a lot longer than that.

“If you’re coming back early from a concussion, you’re really going to struggle if you get another one, and that’s where the damage really, really does happen.”
