The Government is advancing the implementation of National Women’s Economic Empowerment.

President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, while addressing the opening of Parliament yesterday, announced gender-responsive budgeting across all sectors this year.

He highlighted priority legislation work for this purpose. including the Child Justice Bill and Childcare and Protection Bill.

The President emphasised enhancing social protection programmes, especially in addressing climate and disaster shocks.

In tackling health challenges, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will focus on communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Ratu Wiliame stressed the importance of preserving traditions and promoting social cohesion.

The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs will launch a policy frame for this purpose.

Efforts to revitalise the sugar industry aim to increase cane production to 1.8 million tonnes in the 2024 season compared to 1.6 million tonnes in 2022.

The President also addressed climate change impacts, underscoring policies to reduce emissions and fossil fuel dependence.

“Government will continue to implement policies to reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels,” Ratu Wiliame said.

Civil Service efficiency and collaboration will be improved.

The Higher Salaries Commission ensures transparency in executive remuneration.

Notable attendees at the Parliament opening included Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, cabinet ministers, opposition members, judiciary representatives, and diplomats.

To combat drug threats, the Illicit Drugs Control Act will be reviewed.

Collaboration with source countries and stakeholders is key, emphasised the President.

“Partnerships with religious bodies, community leaders, and other stakeholders are crucial in the fight against crime and drug trafficking,” he said.

Priority will be given to reviewing defence, immigration, and national security legislation.
